I recently purchased a print subscription to mental floss and was eager to access my first issue digitally as well - only to find that Im now unable to! Theres no way for print subscribers to log in. Im very upset about this, as being able to access the digital issues was a big reason I subscribed in the first place. Very, very disappointed.
After updating the app I no longer have access to my digital issues that were available for free along with my print subscription. I cant find any way to re enter my subscription information and Im not paying for issues I could download a month ago.
Mental Floss is my favorite magazine, and I love that its gone paperless. Always so interesting and fun to read - I learn something new every time! I just wish they would make this app universal - Id be able to read it much more easily that way, via my phone, on my morning train commute (where I dont dare open my iPad). Especially now that the new iPhones have larger screens it would be ideal. Other than that the app works great, no crashes or problems for me, and would rate this so much higher if I could just read it on my phone. The Week already does this and does it great.... Finally, giving subscribers the option to read content via a web browser (like the New Yorker) would round this subscription out nicely.
With their latest update I can no longer view my subscription for electronic version, even though that is the version I bought. Refund!
Way to go mental floss, reward your loyal following by changing the relationship by making us buy stuff twice, both print and digital. Just sad.
I cant log in as a current subscriber! What a waste of a update. I have a print subscription - even went through support- no answers. This a jacked up app!
I have been a print subscriber of mental_floss since 2010 and have used the iOS app since it first released. I now live in New Zealand where physical copies are a fortune to send, so I send my print copy to my sister in the US and use the digital copy here on my iPad. I even asked mental_floss last year if there was any way to purchase a digital-only subscription and was told there is not, so I bought a 3-year print subscription with the expectation of using my iPad to access the content. Lo and behold, this “lovely” little update came around last week while I was in the middle of reading an issue and now I cannot access anything! When I contacted the app publisher, they said the ball is in mental_floss’s court and that they only handle print subscriptions. This is terrible customer service by mental_floss. I love the magazine, but I refuse to purchase a second annual subscription when I was told less than a year ago that my 3-year subscription would work just fine. This is ridiculous and needs to be corrected.
As others have noted, the latest version is missing the ability for print subscribers to access the digital version. Using the in-app tech support button I reported the bug. They replied saying to go to Subscription -> current subscribers ... Which doesnt exist. Ive sent them a screenshot of the subscription screen and am waiting to hear back.
Have 3yr print subscription. With April update I can no longer access the digital version on the iPad app. This needs to be fixed ASAP. In addition to the access issue the new "stacked covers" view is horrible. Who designed this update? In todays age of rapid app development and realtime customer feedback these sorts of issues are inexcusable.
Three year print subscriber. The only reason I downloaded this app was to be able to access digital versions of my print subscription while traveling. That is not an option with this new update. Aside from that, this is a poor app. I dont want stacked covers. I want to be able to see all recent issues at once and pick one with one touch. Im not sure how this app ever made it out of beta. You did have a beta, right? Will wait for a better version in the next update, or delete.
New app does not support print subscribers at all. I suppose that they are under no obligation to do so but to change policy overnight without as much as an explanation...contacting customer service is a waste of time... Like in most every other industry.
When it works, this is one of my favorite translations of a print magazine to an iPad one, keeping the original content but not necessarily in a strict page-turning way. However, now access to issues is cut off, with no apparent means of logging back in as a print subscriber. The new "stacked" interface is also a terrible idea.
So not only cant you get anything new on this app but my old issues that were on here are now gone. There is no response from customer service. Save the time and forget this dud.
I am a print subscriber that uses this app when traveling. I am now told that the app no longer supports print subscribers. I feel suckered.
This is the absolute worst update of any app. Not only did the update delete all my old issues, there is no way to log in and get them back. They did not respond to any emails. I’m on my second phone call with “support” and they can not help because they are not actually support for the digital version. Usually Mental Floss has their act together, but they dropped the ball big time on this! Someone needs to look for a new job.
I dont know who was behind such a terrible update and why it was even released. Had years of digital issues on my iPad from being a loyal print subscriber....now nothing!!! Get it together mental floss.
Starting with version 5.9, the good user interface was replaced with an unusable mess. They added an emphasis on social networking, to the detriment of basic issue management and reading. I cant tell which issues are downloaded or which one(s) are currently partly read. When it opens on a page, I cant even tell which page of which issue it is. The latest version (5.11) has not fixed the problems. Ive enjoyed reading Mental_Floss on the iPad, but this interface is forcing me back to the paper copy.
I love the magazine, but the app wont show up on my phone after downloading it!
Previously this was a great way to enjoy a great magazine. Now they have changed the interface of the app. The change is horrible. I am going to see if I can get a refund on my subscription.
